Last month, I had the pleasure of listening to the sweet sounds of Leah Smith, Philadelphia-bred singer and songwriter at one of those small underground open mic music spots where you can totally miss if you’re not looking carefully. Even with not the best acoustics, she, along with her equally gifted background singers, was able to capture a full sound with Smith playing on the keys. Reminiscent to Amel Larrieux and Goapele, she brings a breath of fresh air with good R&B melodies and much needed positive lyrics.
At the tender age of 20, she has already performed across the United States and in Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia. She has also been on stage with major artists like Aretha Franklin and Alicia Keys. With the anticipation of her debut record, there is no telling where her career will turn. In the meantime, I will try to catch her in concert soon and listen to her snippets on her official myspace page HERE.
